Sharing a lane with a motorcycle is legal in California. The law allows vehicles to occupy the same traffic lane as a motorcycle, recognizing that motorcycles may need more space to maneuver safely and that giving them room can improve overall traffic flow.

But while it’s legal, it isn’t automatically safe in every situation. Motorcycles are smaller, harder to see, and can stop more quickly or weave to avoid hazards. They’re also more affected by wind and road surface conditions. Because of these factors, you should be extra cautious: give a motorcycle ample following distance, don’t linger inches apart in the same lane, signal clearly when changing lanes, and only pass when you have a full, safe lane available. If you’re unsure, waiting for an opportunity to move to a different lane is often the safer choice.
